Odds to Win NBA MVP: Giannis Favored To Go Back To Back

NBA MVP BETTING ODDS July 11, 2019

The NBA Most Valuable Player award is one of the most coveted accolades in all of sports as it acts as a point of reference for which NBA player was the best of the best in a given season.

This past year, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo earned the distinction as the league’s best overall player and oddsmakers are going back to the well and have made the Greek Freak the favorite to win MVP for the 2019-20 NBA season.

Online sportsbook BetOnline has Giannis as the +300 favorite to win back-to-back MVP trophies and he can become the fourth player since 2006 (Steve Nash, LeBron James, Stephen Curry) to win the award in consecutive years.

After Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry (+500) is next on the list followed by 2017-18 winner James Harden (+700), Kawhi Leonard (+800), LeBron James (+900), Anthony Davis (+1000), Joel Embiid (+1200), Luka Doncic (+1600), Nikola Jokic (+1600) and Karl-Anthony Towns (+2000) to round out the top 10 on the oddsboard.

Why is Giannis Antetokounmpo the Favorite?

The answer is pretty simple: Giannis Antetokounmpo was one of two NBA players to be in the top five in both scoring and rebounding last season and also because the Bucks are primed to be the top team in the Eastern Conference again. He led Milwaukee to the best record in the NBA last season and the Bucks kept most of the band together for another championship push so his chances look promising to repeat as Most Valuable Player.

I tend to loathe taking the favorite for these types of awards as usually there’s no value but Giannis showed a lot this past season as far as competitiveness and improvement. He will likely work on his foul shooting/jump shot in the offseason as that got exposed during the playoffs and he hasn’t been injury-prone thus far in his career.

Outside of the Sixers, I don’t see any team in the East that can hang with the Bucks. Having the best record is key to winning this award as four of the last five winners of this award were on teams that led the standings.

Jokic’s Dad Bod Could Be A Decent Option

The one candidate on this list who I think has great value to win the NBA MVP award is Nuggets center Nikola Jokic at +1600. Jokic averaged 20 points, 10.8 rebounds and 7.3 assists and led all centers in assists and triple-doubles.

The Nuggets used Jokic as the focal point of their offense last season and that carried them to the second-best record in the Western Conference. They’ve made some shrewd moves to improve their roster and the development of Jamal Murray could elevate them to potentially the top seed in the West by the end of the regular season. If the Nuggets have the best record in the Western Conference and Jokic puts up similar stats, he would easily be a top-three MVP candidate.

Players I Wouldn’t Bet On for MVP

Pretty much anyone from the Los Angeles teams (LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George) as I think there are too many unknown variables to make a legitimate case for each player, even with their immense talent.

We don’t know which players on the Lakers and Clippers will have to sacrifice their stats for the greater good and that type of volatility makes it a fool’s bet at this stage of the offseason. Another issue with pairing up all-stars is that voters don’t know who to give the credit to when it’s time to fill out their ballot and they end up splitting the MVP vote.
