Will Any NFL Team Go 16-0 or 0-16 in the 2019 Season?

A Buffalo Bills fan hangs his head in dejection during the fourth quarter against the New York Jets at New Era Field on December 9, 2018 in Orchard Park, New York. New York defeats Buffalo 27-23.

In the NFL, any team can go from a playoff afterthought to a contender in consecutive seasons. But when it comes to clubs performing either exceptionally well or poorly, that option is on the table as well.

Bovada is offering a prop on whether any squad will go 16-0 in the 2019 NFL season, with the odds of it happening at +900 and the chances of it not occurring at -1800. Conversely, the odds on a team going 0-16 sit at +950 with a -1900 price for every franchise to win at least one game.

Going 16-0 is No Easy Task

The last team to complete a perfect regular season was the 2007 New England Patriots, who came up short in a 17-14 Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants.

The 2015 Carolina Panthers won 14 consecutive games to start the year before falling to the Atlanta Falcons in their 15th game, and the 2009 Indianapolis Colts accomplished the same feat prior to seeing their perfect regular-season hopes end. In both instances, the Panthers and Colts ended up losing the Super Bowl.

Before the NFL switched from a 14-game regular season to a 16-game one, the 1972 Miami Dolphins completed a perfect season and playoffs en route to a Super Bowl triumph and a spotless 17-0 record. To this day, that team remains the only one to win the Super Bowl while failing to lose a regular-season contest.

Past Results Suggest 0-16 is a Possibility

The chances of an NFL franchise failing to notch a regular-season victory are significantly higher. The 2017 Cleveland Browns were the symbol of futility in recent years, as the Hue Jackson-led bunch didn’t get a single win in yet another long campaign in Northeast Ohio.

The 2008 Detroit Lions became the first non-expansion team to lose every game in a full season since the Second World War, which is all you need to know about how badly that season went.

According to the latest Super Bowl odds, the Dolphins are projected to be the worst team in the league at +15000 odds. The Cincinnati Bengals (+12500), Arizona Cardinals (+10000), Buffalo Bills (+10000) and Washington Redskins (+10000) aren’t far off.
